Cigarette purchases leads to identity theft arrest
A New York man is facing several charges after allegedly stealing a credit card and using it to purchase cartons of cigarettes.
Alpha Diallo, 22, of Bronx, N.Y., was arrested on a warrant on Feb. 15 after police learned he allegedly stole a credit card from a Louisiana resident and was using it in Darien, police said.
Diallo was charged with identity theft, larceny by use of credit card, illegal use of credit card and receipt of goods by illegal use of credit card.
The incident stemmed from a complaint in September 2010 when the Abbeville, La., police department contacted Darien police because a stolen credit card was being used in town, police said. The Louisiana resident still had possession of his credit card but it was used at Darien Amoco, Darien Gulf Station and Darien CVS, police said.
Surveillance at all three locations showed Diallo purchasing cartons of Newport cigarettes, police said. A total of $357.28 was spent on cigarettes, police said.
Hertz Rent-a-Car was also contacted after surveillance showed Diallo driving a 2010 Dodge Charger which was rented in New York, police said. Diallo had also been arrested by Norwalk police on Oct. 2, 2010, police said.
Diallo was held in lieu of $100,000 bond and appeared in court on Feb. 16.
