Counterfeit money used at Post Road stores
DARIEN — Police are investigating a man who allegedly attempted to use a counterfeit bill at eight different businesses on the Post Road.
Police were alerted to the suspected counterfeit Nov. 11 around 1:35 p.m. when Wiggles and Giggles, a children’s store on the Post Road, contacted them to report the attempted use of the fake bill. The employee on scene said a Hispanic man in his 20s attempted to use the $50 bill to buy a book for $9.50. The employee suspected the bill was fake and told the man she did not have change for it. The man said he would get change, then took the bill and left the store.
Officers spoke to surrounding businesses and found a man matching the same description attempted to use a $50 bill at seven other businesses. Two of the businesses accepted the bill and gave change.
The fake bills were collected and police contacted the Secret Service, which investigates counterfeiting, about the incident.
