The Darien Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools, Stephen V. Falcone, are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Michael Sullivanas Director of Physical Education, Health &Athletics for the Darien Public Schools. He will replace John Keleher, who has retired after an illustrious career which included ten years in this leadership position in Darien.

Michael Sullivan has had a distinguished career in education, assuming increasing levels of responsibility throughout his tenure. Mr. Sullivan began his work in Darien as a student intern and shortly thereafter accepted a teaching position in the Mathematics Department at Darien High School. He was recognized as a teacher who had high expectations for student learning and one who developed strong relationships with students and colleagues. Mr. Sullivan was appointed as the Mathematics Department Chairperson and oversaw the continued expansion of the program. Increasing numbers of students enrolled in high level Advanced Placement classes and the performance of students remained tremendously high. He helped guide curriculum revision in a range of mathematics classes, often drawing on his own experiences as he had taught 200, 300, and Honors level courses. His versatility has been a noted strength. In 2009, Mr. Sullivan was appointed Assistant Principal at Darien High School. His responsibilities include supervision and evaluation of over thirty teachers, curriculum oversight, student management, and facilities coordination. Mr. Sullivan is acknowledged for his collaborative approaches to problem solving, clear and thoughtful communication, and student advocacy.

Mr. Sullivan has had a background in athletics, having played sports at the high school and collegiate level. During his time in Darien, Mr. Sullivan served as a coach in the Boys' Lacrosse program and he continues to be a highly visible supporter of the students and coaches associated with all of the athletic teams. It has been noted that Mike has been able to use his "sharp intellect, remarkable interpersonal skills, strong work ethic, and ....common sense to support the students, parents, and faculty of DHS in an unprecedented way."

Michael Sullivan earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics with a minor in History from Western Connecticut State University. He received a graduate Master of Arts in Education degree through Sacred Heart University and he earned an additional Master's degree in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut.

Professionally, Mr. Sullivan is a member of the Tri-State Consortium and has participated on team visits. He has served on planning teams for NEASC accreditation and has been involved with the Administrator Aspirant Program sponsored by Cooperative Educational Services.

Mr. Sullivan resides with his wife and family in Monroe.
