A 39-year-old Stamford man was is facing multiple charges after police found his 3-year-old granddaughter asleep on the floor of his vehicle.

William Person of 275 Greenwich Ave. was charged with driving under the influence, risk of injury to a minor, transporting a child without a restraint system, operating with a suspended license and failure to return suspended license on Aug. 26.

Police said an officer observed Person stopped in a 2008 Toyota Yaris at a flashing yellow traffic light at the intersection of Post and Rings End roads. The officer said Person was asleep at the wheel and the engine was running. As the officer approached the vehicle, Person took off. He was subsequently pulled over in the area of Old Kings Highway S. The officer smelled alcohol emanating from his person and police said he failed his field sobriety tests.

While searching the vehicle, officers found the 3-year-old girl asleep on the car's floor. The child was subsequently turned over to her mother and the matter was referred to the Connecticut Department of Children and Families for investigation.

Person was held in lieu of $10,000 bond and appeared in court Aug. 27.
