Darien boys cross country team wins third straight Wickham Park Invitational
The No. 1-ranked Darien boys cross country team captured its third consecutive Wickham Park Invitational Championship.
The Blue Wave took the win in the championship race by scoring 78 points ahead of runner-up and No. 5-ranked Hall with 90.In addition, Darien defeated No. 3 Fairfield Prep, No. 9 Staples and No. 10 Brookfield.
"To win three years in a row is tremendous. I remember our first one and how good it felt for our team," Darien coach Tyson Kaczmarek said. I was thinking man, this was a one-time shot. If we could ever win this again it'd be awesome. Three years later we have won it three times in a row. It is just incredible."
Alex Ostberg took control of the course en route to a second place finish in 15:41, breaking the Darien High School record for the Wickham Park course. The previous record was held by John Conley in 2010 at 16:37.
Behind Ostberg were Armstrong Noonan in 11th at 16:57 and Colten Appleby in 14th at 16:59. Marshall Huffman was 21st in 17:06 while Brian Davey was 30th in 17:24. Ben Olsen was 36th in 17:33, and Peter Kreuch was 43rd in 17:47.
"This win is a testament to our team's depth and commitment," Kaczmarek said. "We use this meet as a measuring stick each year. We are right where we want to be."

Darien will next run in the FCIAC Championship on Thursday at Waveny Park.
"FCIACs is going to be a war. Four teams can win it," Kaczmarek said. "The team that has five guys step up will get it done. It is going to be absolutely amazing."
