The Darien boys' track and field team honored Andy Pena before the team's home meet on Thursday. Andy, a freshman, was a member of Darien's cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams this year before passing away suddenly on Friday, March 25.

The track meet took place at Darien High School at 4 p.m. It was a co-ed meet with Wilton. The team honored Pena just prior to the start of the meet with a special ceremony. The specifics of the ceremony were only announced to the team prior to the meet.

Pena's teammates wore black as part of their uniform for the meet in the form of an undershirt, spandex, socks or sweatbands. The team invited the opposing teams as well as the girls' teams at the meet to do the same as a show of support. The boys' team will continue to wear black during the entire regular season in Pena's memory.

"Many of Andy's close friends are on the team," said Tyson Kaczmarek, DHS boys' track coach before the event. "This will be a difficult meet for us. It will be very emotional."
