DARIEN — A burning vehicle shut down a southbound lane of Interstate 95 in Darien late Tuesday afternoon and slowed traffic in the area for hours.

Trooper First Class Kelly Grant said State Police responded at 5:30 p.m., and that life-threatening injuries were reported. Further details were not available Tuesday night.

The state Department of Transportation reported that the passenger vehicle was burning between exits 9 and 10, and causing traffic delays back up to 13 as of 6:45 p.m., with the far right travel lane closed. The vehicle was in a wooded area just off the highway, near the Darien rest stop.

As of 6:45, the DOT estimated the accident would cause delays for up to four hours. The Darien Volunteer Fire Department was still at the scene as of 6:50 p.m., but officials did not have information on what caused the fire.

State Police at Troop G in Bridgeport reported at 8:25 p.m. that the fire was under investigation.
