DARIEN — Police are warning residents of a blackmail scam letter circulating through town.
A resident contacted police after receiving a letter specifically addressed to him that threatened to expose a secret to his wife. The letter said, “I know about the secret you are keeping from your wife. More importantly, I have evidence of what you are hiding.” The sender told the recipient he could either pay $3,500 in Bitcoin or be exposed in the form of “evidence” being sent to the recipient’s wife, family and friends.
Police said they’ve investigated these types of letters and found they’re being sent from out of state. Residents in Connecticut and Massachusetts have received similar letters. Police recommend ignoring them and not responding, as Bitcoin sent to the blackmailer cannot be traced or recovered.
Police also added it is not necessary to contact the department if blackmail letters like this scam are received.
