The Darien Police Department said Tuesday that it is investigating several home improvement scams. Residents are typically being contacted by "Chimney Cleaning Services" claiming that the homeowner's oil company contacted them indicating that the homeowner's system is due for service, police said. The caller then uses pressure tactics to schedule appointments for cleanings and inspections. During the inspection, the homeowner is informed that the chimney is in need of significant repairs. They then charge the unsuspecting homeowner for work that may or may not have been needed. By the time they realize they were victimized, it is often too late, police said.

If there is a question if a company is legitimate, residents should contact the Consumer Protection Home Improvement Hotline at 860-713-6110. If a resident has already fallen victim to a scam, contact the Darien Police Department at 662-5300.
