The forces of nature can be an expensive hassle for towns but Darien was prepared for the lashing it took during the blizzard of 2010.

Administrative Officer Karl Kilduff said the town spent about $25,000 to clean up the town after 18 inches of snow Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. The money spent included overtime for Public Works employees, salt and sand for the roads and private contractors who were brought in to help with snow removal, Kilduff said.

"All of these costs are carried in the budget, so this isn't like a surprise expense for the town," Kilduff said. "We budget each year based on a per storm basis and we figure for about 10 storms per season."
