Darien students honored
Eight Darien residents graduated on Thursday, June 9 from Greens Farms Academy in Westport. Nicholas Corroon (McGill University), Stephanie Garofoli (Tulane University), Nathaniel Gleason (Bucknell University), Wesley Huber (College of Charleston), Nikhil Lai (Wesleyan University), David Morgan (Hamilton College), Peter Shao (McGill University) and Jackson Soule (Dickinson College) were part of the 71-member senior class. Garofoli won the award for outstanding service to the community beyond Greens Farms Academy, Lai won the Spanish award and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society and Morgan was recognized with the computer science award.
Bucknell University has released the Dean's List for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2010-11 academic year. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean's list recognition. Darien students include: Courtney M. Bernat, daughter of David Bernat and Mary Camilli-Bernat of Darien, and a graduate of Convent Of The Sacred Heart, Greenwich; Mackenzie E. Horan, daughter of Peter and Beth Horan of Darien, and a 2007 graduate of Darien High School; Michael B. Kosnik, son of Richard and Barbara Kosnik of Darien, and a 2007 graduate of Darien High School; Gracia T. Willis, daughter of Gregory and Lois Willis of Darien, and a 2008 graduate of Darien High School.
The following Darien students graduated from King Low Heywood Thomas on June 12; Nicholas Bass will attend Indiana University at Bloomington; Kristin Keane will attend Loyola University, Md.; Max Orenstein will attend Duke University; William Qua will attend University of St. Andrews (Scotland); Maximo Reyes will attend St. John Fisher College; Lindsay Sherwood will attend Hope College; Cary Sullivan will attend Trinity College; Patrick Sullivan will attend Northfield Mount Hermon and Max Wardaki will attend Princeton University. The Class of 2011 was comprised of 66 students and the ceremony marked the 146th graduation ceremony in the history of the school.
Andrew Massamillo received a bachelor's degree during the 2011 commencement ceremonies of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, held on May 15. Massamillo, the child of Gene and Susan Massamillo, majored in English.
Army Spec. Zachary J. Reding has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training. During the nine weeks of basic combat training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions. He is the son of Scott and Ann Reding of Darien. Reding graduated from Darien High School in 2003, and received a bachelor's degree from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., in 2007.
Gettysburg College students with a quality point average of 3.33 or higher for a semester's work are placed on the Deans' Commendation List. The following Darien students been placed on the Spring 2011 list: Dana Forkner, a junior, and Madison Hughan, a freshman.
Eckerd College announces the graduation of John Yelverton Freeman, Jr., son of John and Nance Freeman of Darien, and a graduate of Darien High School. One of 532 Eckerd College graduates, Freeman received a Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts during commencement ceremonies in St. Petersburg, Fla., on May 22.
Amber Coutermash of Darien has been named to the Provost List at Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vt., which recognizes full-time students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.25 during the spring semester.
Haverford College announces the graduation of Kevin J. O'Halloran, son of Kevin and Peggy O'Halloran of Darien, and a graduate of St. Luke's School. One of 299 members of Haverford's Class of 2011, O'Halloran received a bachelor's degree in English during commencement ceremonies in Haverford, Pa. on May 15.
A total of 554 bachelor degrees and 42 master's degrees were awarded at the 185th Commencement ceremonies held on the historic quadrangle at Trinity College in Hartford on May 22. The following Darien students have graduated: Philip Khoury, history; Christopher Maycock, political science; and Logan McGowan, history.
