The jazz bands of Darien High and Middlesex Middle schools will present "An Evening of Sweet Jazz" at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, at the Darien Community Association, 274 Middlesex Road.

Jazz fans of all ages are invited to enjoy coffee and dessert while listening to these award-winning bands.

The Darien High School Jazz Ensemble, led by Jonathan Grauer, took first place in the Norwalk Jazz Festival in 2012 and fourth at the Berklee College of Music's High School Jazz Festival in 2011.

The jazz band performed at the DCA last year as well as at the grand opening of Weed Beach. This year, it will compete in the Berklee, Norwalk and Greenwich jazz festivals and the Virginia Beach Festivals of Music Competition.

The Middlesex Jazz Ensemble, led by Jim Carter, has received outstanding reviews at the WesConn Jazz Festival and first place and superior ratings at the "Music in the Parks Festival" over the last several years.

In 2011, the ensemble received a gold medal at the Ponus Ridge Middle School Jazz Festival. In addition to the biannual performances, the ensemble has also participated in the New England League of Middle Schools annual conference and at Lincoln Center, the Tokeneke Club and the Darien senior center.
