Family & Children's Agency has received a $15,000 grant from The Perrin Family Foundation to support the agency's after-school program. The program focuses on middle school students in Norwalk who face multiple barriers to success, providing them with academic support and enrichment programs as preparation for life in high school and beyond.

Rob Cashel, president and CEO of Family & Children's Agency, expressed appreciation for the grant.

"The Perrin Family Foundation has been a valued supporter and partner for many years, and we are so grateful for their continued support, particularly as we work to expand our youth development programs," he said.

The program focuses on three areas: Working with the students to improve academic performance, strengthen character development and support successful implementation of life skills. To reach these goals, students in the program are exposed to diverse opportunities and experiences. Every day after school, the students spend two-and-a-half hours at Norwalk Community College, which houses the program. Four of the days include an hour or more of homework or practice with reading, writing and math skills, supervised by a program staff member or a volunteer tutor.

During the remaining time, students are engaged in a variety of life-skill electives which may include outside speakers, games that emphasize judgment and decision-making skills, culinary or art classes and similar activities. On Fridays, gender-based activities allow the participants to explore life issues, develop friendships and learn leadership skills with members of their gender peer groups.

The Perrin Family Foundation, founded in 1994, is committed to providing equal opportunities for children and young adults to lead safe, productive and creative lives.

The foundation funds a continuum of direct social services and youth empowerment programs in Fairfield County as well as youth engagement and social change programs in underserved areas throughout the state. For more information, visit
