Darien Police 18, Gesualdi Construction 18
The Darien Police and Gesualdi Construction teams tied 18-18 in a well-played and very even Darien Junior Football League Second and Third Grade Flag Division game.
Darien Police’s Gavin Marcy scored twice and Connor Phelps ran in the team’s other touchdown. Boden North picked up a key first down to set up the final Darien Police score.
Gesualdi Construction was led by Nat Li with two touchdowns and Danny Cavoli with the other score. Both defenses made big plays at critical moments in the contest, with the game ending on a Darien Police stop of what would have been a game-winning extra point by Gesualdi Construction.
Noroton Heights FD 6, Darien FD 0
The old saying “defense wins championships” has never been more true than in this year’s Second and Third Grade Flag Division “Heroes Bowl.”
Noroton Heights was victorious 6-0 in this good old fashioned defensive battle. On the play of the game, Liam Brady scored the only TD on a 25-yard run in the fourth quarter, which started as a quarterback sweep right. When the Darien Fire Department’s strong defense converged in the backfield, Liam reversed field and scampered up the left sideline for the score. The score was made possible by some key downfield blocks by Declan Keating and Henry Johnson.
On the defensive side of the ball, Noroton Heights was in shut-down mode all game with key plays from Brendan McCarthy, Rodrigo Miranda, Vinicius Miranda and Gavin Wheeler. Joe Roche, Wade Persinger and Kyler Marshall all contributed with key blocks in the trenches.
The highlights for the Darien Fire Department included a perfectly timed downfield pass from Sean Mihopoulos to Tanner Hennemuth, with Carter Marisca and Nick Rachinsky leading the charge on the defensive side of the ball.
