The GFA golf team began the week by hosting St Luke's at the Birchwood course in Westport, and lost 8-1. Seventh grader Will Lodge (Darien) shot 42 for GFA's low round, earning the team's single point of the afternoon. Junior captain Dustin Cook (Westport), junior Curtis Tauck (Westport), freshmen brothers Giani and Piero Panariello (Westport), and junior Charlie Thompson (Southport) had tough head-to-head matches.
The team ended the week with an 8-1 victory over King School at Sterling Farms in Stamford. Cook (Westport) led all scorers with a 39 earning medalist honors and defeating his opponent by 1 stroke. Giani Panariello (Westport): 41; Tauck: 42; seventh grader Will Lodge (Darien): 44. Piero Panariello came away with a victory, and junior Charlie Thompson (Southport) came within a shot of tying his best round of the year.
Boys varsity lacrosse
On Monday, Apr. 11, the boys lacrosse team traveled to play Kingswood Oxford, with the Dragons losing 16-18. Senior captain Jack Mackle (New Canaan) had 6 goals and 3 assists. Freshman Zach Liston (Wilton) scored four and had four assists. Sophomore face-off man JC Foster (Darien) won 18 draws in his first game at the position.
Then on Wednesday, Apr. 13, the Dragons traveled to New Haven to face the Hilltoppers, falling 18-13. Knotted up 12-12 going into the third quarter the Hilltoppers were able to pull away due to a deeper bench and some critical transition goals. Freshman goalie Thomas Babcock (Westport) made several outstanding saves. Senior captain Isaac Manton (Greenwich) ran on both the defensive and offensive ends of the field, leading the scoring with five goals. Also scoring were Charlie Benson (Darien), Will Byrne (Darien), Liston and Mackle.
GFA had two games this week, falling to Sacred Heart and Harvey School. Freshman Maddy Canning (New Canaan) pitched every inning and led the offense with three doubles. Freshman Leah Attai (Bridgeport) had an RBI single against Sacred Heart. She, sophomores Kendall Roche (Darien), Lydia Groves (Greenwich) and Alyssia Getschow (Westport) scored multiple runs for the Dragons. Defensively, junior Kallie Fellows (Fairfield) led the way, covering first base.
Ultimate Frisbee kicked off its season with a 15-6 win over Ridgefield High School, led by captains senior Bryan Matte (Stratford) and junior Gabe Dumoulin (Southport). Among the highlights was a play by seniors Charlie Mounts (Westport) and Matthew Lichtenberg (Stamford), who completed five consecutive give-and-go passes for a goal. Sophomores Duda Voldman (Stamford) and John Selkowitz (Norwalk) made defensive plays that helped GFA close out the victory.
Saturday the team traveled to The Masters School for the team's first-ever tournament. GFA entered as the sixth seed in the 10-team tournament, and played five games. The first game was against the second seed Middletown High School. GFA took a 6-5 halftime lead, with sharp throws by Dumoulin and diving catches by senior Patrick Friend (Darien, but Middletown came out on top with an 8-6 victory.
For its next two games, GFA fell to North Branford High and Amity Regional High 9-7 and 11-6, respectively. GFA won its last two tournament games against Xavier High School JV, 11-5, and Marianapolis Prep, 11-3, to finish in seventh place. Junior Anish Kosanam (Stamford) led the offense with big receptions and sophomore Jack Soper (Southport) provided steady throws and timely defense.
Wednesday, Apr. 14, GFA hosted Stamford and Staples High Schools at Pequot Yacht Club. GFA was represented by freshmen Griffin Segalla (Stamford) and Alex Wagner (Southport), sophomore Charlie Courtemanche (Norwalk), juniors Tyler Green (Westport), Hobi Lew (Southport) and Will Costello (New Canaan), and seniors Matt Allen (Norwalk) and Caroline Booth (Westport).
GFA faced Stamford in the first two races, winning both, and setting up a final race against Staples to vie for the win. Staples won the first race by 1 point, and in the second race all boats finished within 30 seconds, but the victory went to Staples.
On Saturday, Apr. 16, GFA raced in the New England O'Day Trophy qualifier at Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich. Segalla and Wagner sailed in A division, finishing in fourth place overall. Lew and Allen sailed in B division with Courtemanche and Bentham as alternates, finishing in seventh place overall.
Girls varsity lacrosse
The girls lacrosse team went 3-0 this week, making them 5-0 for the season.
On Monday, Apr. 11, varsity lacrosse won 15-2 against King Low Heywood Thomas School. Freshman goalie Kelly Van Hoesen (Greenwich) had 13 saves on goal. Senior captain Ingrid Backe (Fairfield) had 1 goal; junior Kate Paliotta (Westport) had 3 goals and dominated on the draw; junior Caroline Rintoul (Darien) had 1 goal at midfield. Sophomores Bella Litt (Darien) and Katie Mackle (New Canaan) each had 1 goal. Freshman Nicole Humphrey, (Darien) had three goals, Alex Nesi (Fairfield) had 2 goals and Sarah Logan (Darien) had 1 goal. Eighth graders Ashley Humphrey (Darien) and CC Poli (Fairfield) each had 1 goal.
Wednesday, Apr. 13, the Dragons beat Hopkins 13-5 at home. Backe had 3 goals and junior Paliotta had 5. Ashley Humphrey had 3 goals. Litt and Nicole Humphrey both had 1 goal.
Saturday, Apr. 16, GFA traveled to Miss Porters School in Farmington, winning 14-3. Backe had 2 goals and 1 assist; Paliotta had 4 goals; Logan had 2 goals and 1 assist; and Ashley Humphrey had 2 goals and 3 assists. The defensive was led by eighth grader Meg Nesi (Westport), freshmen Eva Ebbesen (Westport), Isabelle Jackson (Greenwich) and Whitney Rintoul (Darien); sophomores Molly Cunningham (Old Greenwich), Litt (Darien), Katie Mackle (New Canaan), Ryan Morris (Stamford) and Caroline Rintoul. Van Hoesen made 14 saves.
The Dragons baseball team faced King on Wednesday, Apr. 13, falling 11-3. The Dragons' offense came alive with a 3-run fourth inning to pull within one. The rally was led by freshman center fielder James Velgot (Weston) who went 3-3 on the day and drove in a run on his RBI double in the inning. Junior catcher Tim Mira (Stamford) had a double in the inning with 2 RBIs. Senior shortstop Jules Becker (Westport) went 2-4. Senior second baseman Christian Rivera (Bridgeport) was strong on defense.
Saturday, GFA traveled to St. Luke's, winning 12-3. The Dragons were led by freshman pitcher Sean Hogan (Westport) who went all 7 innings, allowing 4 hits while striking out 3. He also aided the offense with a 1-3 2-RBI day. GFA took control of the game in the third inning with 8 runs, with RBI hits from seniors Paul Bozzella (Westport) and Rivera. Juniors Mack Muller (Westport) and Chris Glynn (Stamford) went 4-5 and 2-4, respectively. Muller reached base four times.
Girls varsity tennis
GFA went 1-2 in its opening week.
The Dragons swept Cheshire Academy by a score of 9-0. Singles scores were: Playing No. 1 singles this year again for GFA is co-captain sophomore Devon Wolfe (Darien), who won her match 10-1; eighth grader Sarah Wagner (Westport), No. 2 singles, 10-0; senior co-captain Lydia Picoli (Wilton): 10-0; eighth grader Ryan Boyle (Southport): 10-2; sophomore Kate Flicker (Fairfield):10-3; junior Lauren Ritchey (Norwalk): 10-5.
Doubles scores: Wolfe and Wagner: 8-0; Boyle and junior Blair Marine (Darien): 8-0; junior Alexis Messina (Old Greenwich) and freshman Allie Agnew (Westport): 8-3.
GFA next faced Hopkins on Wednesday, Apr. 13, with GFA falling 6-1. The Dragons' lone win came at No. 4 singles, with Flicker winning 6-3, 6-2. In an exhibition match, junior Katie Metro (junior, Westport) defeated her Hopkins opponent by a score of 8-5.
The third match of the week was Apr. 16 against tennis powerhouse Hotchkiss School. While GFA lost the match 1-8, the win came from Wagner, filling in at No. 1 singles, who took the third set breaker.
