GFA roundup: Darien athletes contribute across the board
Boys Varsity Soccer
The Dragons won twice during the week to improve to 3-2-1. They began the week by defeating Wooster School 6-0. In the 20th minute, senior captain Charlie Mounts (Westport) was assisted by fellow senior captain Ben Strait to give GFA the 1-0 lead. Strait scored twice, once off an assist by junior Mike Medvedev (Stamford), and the second off an assist by senior Stephen Gallagher (Fairfield). Gallagher also scored off a pass from Strait. After an own goal from Wooster, senior Paul Bozzella (Westport) rounded out GFA's scoring off a pass from freshman Zach Liston (Wilton). Sophomore Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) and junior Matt Schnabel (Greenwich) split duties in the goal for the shutout. The defense was anchored by senior captain Bryan Matte (Stratford), senior Matt Allen (Fairfield), junior Rocco Babun (Weston) and sophomore James Velgot (Weston). Contributing to the victory were seniors Elliot Beckert (Westport), Patrick Friend (Darien), and Pat Seegers (Stamford); juniors Sami Canaan (New Canaan), Jack Moley (Darien), and Hobi Lew (Fairfield); sophomores Jake Sinnott (Fairfield), Nick Attai (Bridgeport), Jack Murray (Westport), and Drew Durkin (Darien); and freshmen Will McCall (Westport), and Jack Wolfsohn (Easton).
On Saturday, Oct. 3, GFA had a 3-1 win over FAA rival St Luke's. After a St. Luke's own goal eight minutes into the first half, Strait scored off an assist from Mounts to give GFA a 2-0 halftime advantage. In the second half, St Luke's scored on a penalty kick to make it 2-1 before Babun (Weston) scored to give GFA the 3-1 win. Holzinger (Norwalk) made 14 saves behind a defense that included Velgot, Matte, Allen, Lew, Murray, Medvedev, Sinnott, and Liston. GFA, now 3-2-1, faced Hamden Hall Wednesday after press time.
Boys Cross Country
The Dragons met for their second FAA mega-meet Sept. 30 at Sherwood Island in Westport. Senior captain Alex McCall (Westport) came in fourth place out of 100 runners with a time of 18:13. Sophomore Charlie Courtemanche (Norwalk) finished ninth with a time of 18:39.9. Sophomore Sean Minson (Darien) finished in 11th place, with his best season time of 18:52.6 minutes. Junior co-captain, Scott Barnett (Ridgefield) finished in 28th place with time of 19:54. Junior, Tyler Green, rounded out GFA’s five scoring finishers with a time of 20:18. The GFA boys are now in third place in the FAA.
Girls Varsity Soccer
Girls varsity soccer gave up their first goals of the season against WNEPSSA opponent Hopkins School Wednesday. While the home team of Hopkins scored first, the Dragons from GFA quickly responded with a goal by eighth grader Elyse Kimball (Fairfield). Just minutes later, freshman Sophie Staeger (Southport) scored off a cross from freshman Ella Murphy (Darien). In the second half, Hopkins scored early to give the game its final 2-2 tally.
The girls varsity volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Wooster by the scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-14. The team had 21 digs and 26 kills. Junior Olivia Sullivan (Norwalk) had 11 kills and senior tri-captain Allie Carey had 10 kills and 8 aces. Setter Meg Nesi (Westport) had 9 assists; sophomore Ililta Pina (Westport) had 8 assists. The back-row was held down by senior tri-captain Rory Shinnick (Westport), junior Meg Sinnott (Fairfield), freshman Nicole Humphrey (Darien) and freshman Alex Nason (Darien).
On Saturday GFA pushed its record to 4-2 with a 3-0 win over Chase Collegiate by the scores of 25-21, 25-14 and 25-17. The Dragons were down 16-21, until senior Nina Rodgers (Fairfield) rattled off 8 consecutive serves including 4 aces to end the first set. In the second set Carey had 8 consecutive serves, including 5 aces to end the second set. Shinnick had 10 digs. The Dragons are now 4-2 and faced Westover on Wednesday after press time.
