GFA roundup: Darien athletes contribute to succcess

Boys varsity soccer
Boys soccer began the week with a loss to Rye Country Day School 3-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 14, before defeating Gunnery on Saturday, Oct. 17, 3-2.
In the game against RCDS, senior captain Ben Strait (Stamford) scored for the Dragons, with an assist from Ian Lee (Greenwich).
On Saturday, Gunnery scored first after 10 minutes, answered by GFA junior Mike Medvedev (Stamford) to tie the game at 1 going into halftime. In the second half, Gunnery struck first, but the Dragons fought back with Strait's first goal of the game tying it at 2-2. Strait then scored the game winner off a Medvedev assist with 4 minutes left, to give GFA the victory. Senior captain Charlie Mounts (Westport), playing in the midfield, also had an assist. The team had contributions from senior Stephen Gallagher (Fairfield), junior Hobi Lew (Fairfield), sophomore Jack Murray (Westport), sophomore Ian Lee (Greenwich), senior Paul Bozzella (Westport), and senior Will Logan (Darien). Holding down the defense were senior captain Bryan Matte (Stratford), senior Matt Allen (Fairfield), junior Rocco Babun (Weston), and sophomore James Velgot (Weston) in front of sophomore keeper Henry Holzinger (Norwalk).
The team is now 5-3-1.
Girls varsity soccer
Facing Suffield Academy Wednesday, Oct. 14, the GFA Dragons came home with a 4-2 WNEPSSA victory. Suffield Academy scored first on a direct kick from outside the box. Answering from GFA was junior Clare Mengel (Fairfield). A few minutes later, eighth grader Elyse Kimball (Fairfield) scored off a deflected shot to give GFA the 2-1 lead. Suffield Academy continued to battle and was able to get one more before the end of the half. In the second half, senior captain Erin Reilly (Fairfield) scored off a direct kick for the 3-2 lead. Minutes later, freshman Ella Murphy (Darien) rebounded a teammate's shot and put the ball in for the fourth and final goal of the game. Also factoring into the win were junior Bella Litt (Darien) and freshman goalie Allie Agnew (Westport).
On Saturday the Lady Dragons played their homecoming match against FAA rival King School, defeating the opponent 4-1. Though the first half was scoreless, senior tri-captain Erin Reilly (Fairfield) moved to the midfield in the second half, where she was able to chip the ball over the top of the opposing team's defense, finding junior Clare Mengel (Fairfield), who shot the ball past the diving King goalie. King responded with a goal to tie the game, but GFA scored three more goals for the win, with the remaining goals coming from Kimball, Reilly and Mengel. GFA is now 8-1-2.
Boys cross country
The GFA boys ran against Brunswick and St. Luke’s at a meet hosted by Brunswick. Charlie Courtemanche (Norwalk) led the team with a fourth place finish and a season PR time of 18:08. Next for GFA was senior captain Alex McCall (Westport), taking seventh place and finishing 19:01. Sean Minson (Darien), co-captain Scott Barnett (Ridgefield) and Tyler Green (Westport) rounded out the top five for GFA with times of 19:13, 19:22 and 20:47, respectively.
On Saturday, running against King and Harvey, seven GFA runners finished in the top 10 with McCall taking first place for the 2-mile course at 11:12. Minson (11:23), Courtemanche (11:23), Barnett (12:07), and Green (12:38) helped secure the win for GFA.
