Girl getting off school bus hit by distracted driver
DARIEN — A 12-year-old middle school girl ended up in the hospital after being struck by a distracted driver while she was getting off the school bus.
Around 4:10 p.m. on May 2, the girl was leaving the school bus which was stopped in the right lane on the Post Road. The full-sized bus had its external stop sign displayed along with flashing red lights. The girl was crossing the Post Road when she was struck by the passenger side mirror of a 2015 Chevrolet midsize truck traveling eastbound in the left lane, police said.
The girl was brought to the hospital for an evaluation. She suffered some scrapes and bruises.
The driver, Gary Hartog of Rowayton, told investigators at the scene that he was looking down at his ringing phone on the seat and didn’t notice the stopped bus or the girl. Hartog was issued an infraction for failing to stop for a school bus and distracted driving, accruing him $615 in fines.
