Letter: Teacher, students help those in need

There are 25 extremely disadvantaged children in Nagarote, Nicaragua, who have been able to attend school for another year thanks to the initiative of Mike Tracey, Purple Team social studies teacher at Middlesex Middle School and the generosity of his students and their parents.
Although most of their parents never finished sixth grade, the youngsters in Nagarote are completing high school and continuing on to college thanks to the Middlesex scholarships.
The scholarship program at Middlesex started five years ago with Frank Keen and the Aqua Team and continued with Mike Tracey after Frank retired. It is under the auspices of the Norwalk/Nagarote Sister City Project, a partnership for sustainable community development between the people of Nagarote, Nicaragua and the Greater Norwalk Area of Connecticut (www.sistercityproject.org).
The Nagarote students recently sent letters and photographs to the Purple Team students thanking them and sharing a bit about their lives. The Sister City Project thanks Mike, his students and their parents for their continuing very generous support.
