Middlesex hosts Charter Oak Scholastic Open

Middlesex Middle School hosted its first Quiz Bowl tournament called the Charter Oak Scholastic Open Sunday Jan. 29. Eight schools from Boston, New York and Connecticut came to Middlesex to compete. Ken Romeo, Middlesex Middle School math teacher and MMS Quiz bowl team coordinator, organized and ran the full day tournament.
The eight Quiz Bowl teams, comprised of four students per team, competed in seven games total. Each game consisted of two rounds of questions. The National Quiz Bowl questions range over the entire spectrum of middle school curriculum as well as special events, sports, and popular culture. The last round of competition in the Charter Oak Scholastic Open was single elimination.
The three Middlesex teams entered into this tournament did well. The Silver Team, featuring Jack Lavin, Julia Tong, Tommy Paul and Graham Webb, finished fourth. The Middlesex White Team, featuring Arija Forsyth, Brendan Berrigan, Johnathan Stimpson and J.P. Barce, placed second. The Middlesex Blue Team, featuring Sarishka Desai, Sarah LeHan, Michael Borecki and Porter Bowman, swept the competition with 10-0 and won the first ever Charter Oak Championship.
