Month of music at the DCA
The DCA brings the sounds of music to our historic Meadowlands throughout the month of March. Instrumentalists from near and far will be featured in events offered to all.
The events begin March 7 with the Darien High School Jazz Ensemble, a group that has received strong acclaim from audiences throughout the area. Led by Jonathan Grauer, these young performers will share techniques and creativity beyond their years. Free to DCA members, $10 for non-members.
March 14 will be an evening of insights into the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera. Zarin Mehta, president and executive director of the New York Philharmonic, and Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, will discuss their extensive careers in the classical music business.
Mehta spent 12 years at the Philharmonic and was instrumental in bringing the New York Philharmonic to North Korea. Gelb has focused on revitalizing opera and connecting it to a wider audience, launching such initiatives as "The Met: Live In HD" and "Metropolitan Opera Radio" on Sirius Satellite Radio. Music critic Jay Nordlinger will moderate. Members $15, non-members $25.
Melodies will next float through the halls as Jonathan Yates directs the Chamber Music Group on March 21. Yates made his professional orchestral conducting debut at 23, is an accomplished solo pianist who has toured internationally, and is the founding music director of Camerata Notturna, one of New York City's young chamber orchestras. Free to members, non-members $10.
The month is capped off on March 28 with a twin piano concert featuring two high energy "stride style" piano players playing familiar songs from the Great American Songbook (Cole Porter, etc) and well known jazz songs. DCA member Joe Holmes is well known for his Swing Band and energetic piano. His partner Ed Clute is a well-known jazz pianist across upstate New York. Reunited after a 40-year hiatus, they have an uplifting chemistry. Members $15, non-members $25.
All performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings. Call the DCA at 203-655-9050 to reserve your seat All events are held at the Darien Community Association, 274 Middlesex Road, Darien.
