DARIEN — Police arrested a 21-year-old man from Roslindale, N.Y. after he tried to use a fraudulent credit card to buy a gift card at Walgreens.
Around 2:25 p.m. on June 19, Yasir Eltigani tried to buy a gift card for $450 at the Walgreens on Heights Road. Employees found his credit card suspicious and asked the New York man for identification, which he provided. The suspects then called the police.
Officers were able to locate Eltigani on scene. Eltigani told the officers he was trying to buy a Father’s Day present for his dad and he’d brought the credit card in Brooklyn, N.Y. from someone who embossed his name over the original owner’s name.
Officers checked with the bank associated with the card and found the number on the card was associated with a credit union in New Mexico. The bank told officers a $374.10 charge was made at a Stamford Walgreens earlier that day. The original owner of the card was made aware of the incident and told to follow up with her bank.
Eltigani was charged with use of a stolen credit card, illegal use of a credit card, third-degree identity theft and sixth-degree criminal attempt at larceny. He was given a court date of June 29.
