DARIEN — Police charged a 28-year-old New Haven man with drunk driving after he allegedly drove the wrong way down the Post Road.

On March 17 around 1:50 a.m., an officer on duty observed Jorge Herrera-Vasquez of Sherman Avenue driving a black 2005 Jeep Cherokee on the Post Road near Richmond Drive. The New Haven man was seen exiting Interstate 95 South when he stopped at the exit ramp and made a wrong-way left turn onto the eastbound lane of Post Road. Herrera-Vasquez then entered I-95 South at entrance 13.

The officer stopped Herrera-Vasquez on I-95 and saw his eyes were red and watery. The officer also smelled alcohol coming from the car. Herrera-Vasquez gave the officer an international driver’s license and the Darien officer called a Spanish speaking officer for assistance. The officer gave Herrera-Vasquez a field sobriety test in Spanish, which he failed. Police placed him under arrest on charges of operating with a suspended license, driving under the influence and driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

Herrera-Vasquez agreed to take a breath test. Around 2:30 a.m., his blood alcohol content was .17 and around 2:50 a.m., it was .168. Herrera-Vasquez posted a $500 bond. He will appear in court March 27.
