Atria Darien will showcase the artwork of Polly White at an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6.

The exhibit will continue through March in the Gratia Gillespie Art Gallery, 50 Ledge Road.

White grew up in an artistic home with two brothers who were self-taught wood sculptors. Her love of painting began later in life when she enrolled in an evening adult beginner art class at a high school in Stamford.

She credits two teachers, Ruth Spiegel and Rayma Spaulding ,for lighting her artistic spark. At first, White was drawn to the knife-painting technique, but now primarily works in pastels. While she enjoys creating portraits and landscapes, her favorite works center around animals. She attends a painting group at the Darien Community Association, where Bernice Weiss mentors the class.
