DARIEN — The town’s Public Works Department will open the Gorham’s Pond tide gates beginning Monday, with a scheduled closing on Wednesday for periodic flushing and cleaning of the pond. It is not possible to open the gates after extensive rain storms or a series of very high tides because of the large volume of water flowing over the dam. Therefore, the opening or closing of the gates may be delayed dependent on weather.

DARIEN — With Christmas just around the corner, Darien EMS-Post 53 and Nielsen’s Florist & Garden Shop have teamed up to host their annual Home for the Holidays shopping and table-scape fundraising event on Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event takes place at Nielsen’s, 1405 Post Road in Darien. This will be the fifth year Nielsen’s has partnered with Post 53 in support of its role in the community. The event has become a new tradition to kick off holiday shopping, enjoy a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres, while making a difference. Last year, Home for the Holidays raised more than $5,000 — with a five-year total of nearly $25,000 — to support Post 53’s work. Tickets are $20 at the door or $15 when purchased from a Post 53 member before the event. Raffle tickets are $5.

DARIEN — The Darien Old Timers Athletic Association will host its 56th annual Sports Award Dinner on Nov. 13 at 6:15 p.m. at the Water’s Edge at Giovanni’s. The dinner recognizes the accomplishments of Darien athletes, coaches and other individuals who support the opportunity for athletics to be part of the educational and community experience in Darien, to raise funds to provide scholarships for Darien High School student-athletes, and to provide monetary support to other local programs that have a special need. It is also a time to meet with old friends and to reminisce about days gone by. The honorees this year include Rick Poccia, Perry Pierce, Charlie Bounty, Cappy Craig Waters, Tom O’Donnell, Fran Principe, and Mitch Longley. Tickets are available for $70 or tables for 10 for $700 by calling Harold Curtis at 203-655-7073, Greg Palmer at Palmer’s Market at 203-655-2077, Bill Peters at 203-536-1455 or Joe Warren at 203-940-3286.
