DARIEN — There are 39 Blue Ribbon public schools in Connecticut, according to publicschoolreview.com, one of which is Darien’s Hindley Elementary School. Hindley and the other 38 schools have been recognized by the state Department of Education for achieving superior standards of academic excellence.

The white colonial house with black shutters at 22 Swifts Lane sits in the middle of that Blue Ribbon district so any young children that may be part of the next family would have the option of attending one of the top-rated schools in the state. This house deserves a blue ribbon as well not just for its floor plan and amenities inside and out but for its location in a quiet neighborhood close to town amenities.

This traditional center hall colonial sits on a 1.24-acre level property at the end of a cul-de-sac, one side of which abuts protected open space, meaning it can never be developed, assuring the next residents that their privacy will also be protected. The current owners call it “the best of both worlds” because the property is quiet and private but they are able to walk, jog and bike ride a short distance to Pear Tree Point and Weed Beach. The Metro North train station is a short car ride away, as are local shops, restaurants, and the YMCA.

The 4,741-square-foot L-shaped house was built in 1993. It is tucked onto this professionally landscaped property at the end of a long driveway, lined in Belgium block. There is an ample parking area, which is fortunate as this is a great entertainment house. The house has a red brick façade on the side of the house that contains the two-car attached garage. A stone path leads to the front entrance, which has sidelights and a transom.

Inside, the formal living room has a fireplace with a yellow brick firebox and black granite surround, a door to a sun room and French doors to the fieldstone patio in the backyard, which is enclosed by a white picket fence. The formal dining room has two built-in corner china cabinets, wainscoting on the lower walls, bay window, and a wall of windows looking out to the yard. The sun room has three walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. One wall has French doors to the yard and on the opposite wall there is a sliding door to the yard.

The newly updated kitchen has very clean lines with a hardwood floor, two center islands, skylight, Carrera marble counters, a built-in window seat in the eat-in area, and a door to the patio and yard. The islands are also topped in marble and one of them serves as a breakfast bar for three. Appliances include a GE Profile induction cook top, Bosch double ovens and a Sub-Zero refrigerator.

There is a study area in the kitchen but there is also a study area or homework space between the kitchen and mudroom. From the mudroom there is access to the garage and the full unfinished basement, which is carpeted and used as a play area. It has lots of storage and lots of possibilities if it is finished. Also in the mudroom are doors on opposite walls, one to the front yard and one to the backyard.
