On the market: A castle-like feel

The stone house at 72 Delafield Island Road in Darien is like being on an island within an island. The structure, designed by Frazier Peters, is situated on a parcel of hillside in the private Delafield Island Association.
The driveway curls up between healthy, fully grown pachysandra, and arrives at a stone structure with cedar shingles and a turret at its center. A long path leading to the back leads to a stone patio and pool, and tall trees surround the back property.
Up the manicured path in front, centered with a wide, bright blue flagstone walk, is the main entrance, a masterpiece of distinct design -- five circular steps spanning a quarter of a circle.
Inside, the house has a castle-like quality, yet feels modern.

Immediately to the left of the entrance is a sunken living room with a sturdy, simple fireplace, thick oak flooring, a medieval chandelier and -- through two sets of French doors -- a view of the private pool and its cascading waterfall.
To the right of the living room is a kitchen that seems aesthetically apart from the castle feeling, but is charming -- a combination of quaint country paneling, polished granite counters and airy cabinetry. There's an island and eat-in area.
There also is an elevator, which goes down to a workout room and the attached three-car garage.
Off the kitchen, at the front of the house, is a small dining room with recessed lighting, a tapered box ceiling, wood floors and wainscoting.
On the other side of the kitchen is a family room with many sets of doors leading out, a high ceiling with a fan, and -- as in the kitchen -- a large-slab stone floor.
From the living room, down a couple of steps farther to the south side of the building, three bedrooms run along a roomy hall, with a Jack-and-Jill bathroom between two, and another bathroom in the third.
Stairs climb from the living room, offering a commanding view from the top balcony, where high windows give a lot of light to the room. Upstairs is a master suite.
To the left is a bedroom-sized walk-in closet. There's a small sitting area in the hall, and another large walk-in off that. A separate door opens into an angular bedroom with a high ceiling, carpeting and a chandelier between two skylights.
The bathroom at the back centers on a large spa tub with a great view of the pool, waterfall and outdoor hot tub. There's a separate shower and toilet.
