Open house, other events at DCA
Open house scheduled
An open house will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, when guests are welcome to explore the variety of classes, workshops and cultural lectures, gather fliers and speak directly to instructors and organizers.
Attendees also will tour Meadowlands, the historic home and gardens of the Darien Community Association.
Staff from Thrift Shop and other groups will be on hand to discuss volunteering.
Admission is free.

Carolyn's Absolutely Fabulous Events will re-create a proper British Tea Room from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12.
Classically British treats will be offered. Future teas are Dec. 5, Feb. 13, May 9 and June 5.
The cost is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers.
Without a cookbook
Certified home chef Paula Nusslein launches a new Cooking Essentials series of classes beginning Tuesday, Sept. 17.
The classes are designed to help the home chef cook with confidence and breathe new life into their everyday cooking. Class format includes lecture, demonstrations and tastings. Students learn the how and why behind cooking methods and techniques, as well as how to buy, store, prepare and serve food. All topics and recipes demonstrated in class will be provided in a handout for use at home.
The first two classes of 10 are offered in September. "Stocks I: White Stocks for Quick 'n Easy Soups, Pan Sauce, and Rice" will take place Sept. 17. Attendees will learn to make two chicken and vegetable stocks. "Sauces I: Two "Mother sauces" will be offered on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Students will learn key components of a good sauce. Classes run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and are $55 for members and $70 for nonmembers. Class size is limited to 18.
Blue Notes open to singers
The Blue Notes, a philanthropic group of women who perform in four-part harmony for senior centers, assisted living facilities and other audiences throughout southern Fairfield County, is accepting singers.
Rehearsals begin on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Performances start in late October.
Learn to make jewelry
A new jewelry-making class will start on Tuesday, Sept. 17, with instructor Sue Ozanne.
Students will learn to make their own "jump ring" bracelet during a two-hour workshop. Students will learn how to bend and loop rings to make a piece of wearable art. All materials and tools will be provided.
The class, which takes place from 1 to 3 p.m., is limited to students. The cost is $50 for members and $60 for nonmembers. Registration and payment is required by Friday, Sept. 13.
