The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for the residents of Darien. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office located in Town Hall or through the mail. Fall 2010 Programs
Little Scientists: Little Scientists is a "hands-on approach" to learning about the world of science. Little Scientist teachers follow an eight-week curriculum with a range of topics including Why the Sky is Blue, Magical Magnets and the Forces of Gravity. Classes meet each Tuesday in Room 119 of Town Hall starting Oct. 12 through Dec. 7. Children 4 and 5 years of age meet from 3 to 3:45 p.m., students ages 5 and 6 will meet from 4 to 4:45 p.m., and children ages 6 to 8 will meet from 5 to 5:45 p.m. The fee for this program is $150.
Golf lessons: PGA/LPGA certified professional Roxanne Mitchell will offer youth golf lessons. Instruction will focus on driving, putting and chipping. Golf clubs will be provided (or you may use your own). Lessons meet on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for youth ages 6 to 8 and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for ages 9 to 14. This program will run for four weeks starting on Oct. 5, at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. The program fee is $120.
Future Stars Basketball: Darien Parks and Recreation announces Future Stars Basketball Academy will be offering an instructional program for boys and girls ages 5 to 10 this fall on Thursday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. This program will meet for 8 weeks from Oct. 14 through Dec. 16. The program fee is $199 and each player will receive a Future Stars jersey for participating.
Junior Paddle Tennis Lessons: These clinics are an introduction to the game of paddle tennis. Clinics will utilize fun drills and games to teach participants the rules and strategies of paddle tennis. Paddles will be provided, or participants may use their own. Clinics will run at Weed Beach for 8 weeks on Mondays starting Oct. 18. Lessons for youth ages 7 to 10 will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. and from 5 to 6 p.m. for ages 11 to 14. The fee for these lessons is $215 per participant.
Safe Boating: Connecticut Safe Boating comes to Darien to offer this eight-and-a-half hour course that will meet the requirements to obtain a Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate. This class will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 12, and Thursday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 10:15 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall. Participants must attend both dates and all hours to be considered for certification. The fee for this program is $109 per person. Pre-registration is required.

Adult Paddle Tennis Lessons: Buddy Scudder, Certified Platform Tennis Professional, will be offering adult clinics at Weed Beach this fall. Instruction will focus on stroke production, strategy and teamwork with a mixture of high intensity drills, point-situation drills, technique work and match play Clinics will run for eight weeks starting Oct. 18 on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Please check the website or call the office for specific times and levels. The fee is $320 for these 1-and-a-half hour clinics. Pre-registration is required for these programs.
