Parks and Rec. winter programs
The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for the residents of Darien. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office located in Town Hall, or through the mail. Winter 2011 Programs
Hotshot Basketball Contest: The Darien Parks and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Darien YMCA, will be offering a Hotshot Basketball Contest at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium on Tuesday, Dec. 28, (Snow Date is Wednesday, Dec. 29). This program is free to all Darien residents but every participant must pre-register online or at the Parks and Recreation office on or before Monday, Dec. 27. This contest is an opportunity for boys and girls ages 9 to 15 to demonstrate their dribbling, ball handling and shooting skills. Each player will shoot from five different "hotspots" and earn points. There will be a male and female winner for each of the three age groups. Boys and girls ages 9 and 10 will shoot from noon to 1:30 p.m, ages 11 and 12 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., and ages 13 to 15 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Winners will move onto a regional contest with an opportunity to move onto the state level.
Tiny Tots Soccer: Blue Wave Kickers' Tiny Tots Soccer engages children in physical activity while developing their motor and basic soccer skills. Mommy & Me classes are offered on Monday and Friday mornings and classes for children ages 3 to 5 are offered Monday to Saturday. Jon Bradley, DHS varsity soccer coach will run this popular program. Karate: Darien Martial Arts Academy will be offering karate lessons this winter at their studio on Heights Road. Improved strength and stamina, better balance, and improved listening & concentration skillls are a few examples of how martial arts can compliment both classroom and sports performance. This program is offered starting Dec. 1 for 12 weeks. Program fee is $375.
Future Stars Basketball: Darien Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce that Future Stars Basketball Academy will be offering an instructional program for boys and girls ages 5 to 10 this winter on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium (parents can choose either day). This program will meet for eight weeks starting Jan. 3. The program fee is $199 per session and each player will receive a Future Stars jersey for participating.
Junior Paddle Tennis Lessons: These clinics are an introduction to the game of paddle tennis. Clinics will utilize fun drills and games to teach participants the rules and strategies of paddle tennis. Paddles will be provided, or participants may use their own. Clinics will run at Weed Beach for 9 weeks on Mondays. Lessons for youth ages 7 to 10 will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. and ages 11 to 14 will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. The fee for these lessons is $240 per participant.
Pee-Wee Tennis: Future Stars Tennis will be offering indoor pee-wee tennis lessons at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium starting in January. Lessons are held for children ages 3 to 5 on Monday mornings from 10 to 10:45 and 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Lessons are also held Monday or Thursday afternoons in 45-minute increments from 12:15 to 3:15 p.m. Each participant will receive a tennis racket. Program fee is $115 per participant.
Guitar Lessons: Want to be the next American Idol? Now's your chance to get a start. Learn chords, scales, theory and, best of all, learn to play your favorite songs. Classes meet each Wednesday in the Town Hall small gymnasium starting Jan. 5 through March 2. Beginners meet from 4 to 5 or 5 to 6 p.m. while intermediates meet from 6 to 7 p.m. This program is for children ages 8 to 15. The fee for this program is $199.
Adult Paddle Tennis Lessons: Buddy Scudder, Certified Platform Tennis Professional, will offer adult clinics at Weed Beach this winter. Instruction will focus on stroke production, strategy and teamwork with a mixture of high intensity drills, point-situation drills, technique work and match play. Clinics will run for nine weeks starting Jan. 3 on either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. The fee is $360 for the clinics. Pre-registration is required for these programs.
Guitar Lessons: These group lessons will have you learning chords, scales, theory and will teach you how to play your favorite songs. One-hour classes will focus on providing a high level of instruction in a fun, cooperative atmosphere. Program is for adults who have an interest in the guitar and music in general. Guitars will be provided for all students to use during their lessons. Rentals are also available. Classes run Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. starting Jan. 5 through March 2. Program will meet in the Town Hall small gymnasium. Fee is $199 per person.
Darien Sail & Power Squadron (DSPS) Boating Courses: The DSPS will be offering three separate boating courses starting the week of January 10th: Advanced Piloting on Mondays, Sail on Tuesdays, and Coastal Boating on Wednesdays. All classes are held at Middlesex Middle School from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Advanced Piloting runs through March 28, Sail through March 15, and Coastal Boating will end on March 2.
