The police department has issued an advisory asking all residents to avoid any excessive travel through the afternoon and evening as high winds and heavy rains are expected.

According to the advisory, residents should expect high winds and rain with the potential for downed trees, power outages and localized flooding. Police ask that residents avoid driving through areas blocked by barricades and yellow tape, and to avoid any downed wires.

Residents should also consider securing any outdoor items such as grills, garbage containers and patio furniture.

The police are asking people to avoid calling 911 for anything except a true emergency. For non-emergencies, the Police Communications Center telephone number is 203-662-5300.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring weather reports carefully.
