The finalized budget proposal is still in the works, but recent board meetings have included presentations on potential projects such as a cafeteria expansion at Darien High School and a new alternative high school for the town. A Chromebook rollout at the middle and elementary schools will also be on the budget as a major initiative.

On Jan. 5, the board will have a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Board of Education room at Central Office to review the 2017-18 budget format. There will also be a presentation of the superintendent’s proposed budget for the fiscal year which starts July 1.

On Jan. 7, the board will meet in the same location starting at 8:30 a.m. for an all-day meeting for discussion of the superintendent’s proposed 2017-18 personnel, operating and equipment budgets. According to board chairman Michael Harman, the agenda for this meeting will be available closer to the day of the meeting.

In case of snow, the all-day budget meeting will be held Jan. 21. Breaks will be held throughout the meeting.

On Jan. 10, the board will meet again at its normally scheduled time and place for its first normal meeting of the new calendar year. There will be presentations on the board’s master agenda for February through August, proposed changes to the high school calendar and the revised high school schedule for SAT and CAPT tests, as well as a report on the 2016-17 district budget and approval of budget transfers. There is also a scheduled update on the technology rollout and a meeting with the Board of Finance to discuss the proposed 2017-18 budget.

The board will meet again on Jan. 24 as part of its normal meeting schedule and meet with the RTM Education and Finance and Budget Committees regarding the superintendent’s proposed budget. There will also be discussion of unfinished business from the proposed budget, discussion of budget modifications and review and discussion of the stadium lights report to planning and zoning. The board will also approve upcoming agendas at this meeting.

On Jan. 31, there will be another special board meeting at the auditorium at town hall, where there will be a public hearing on the proposed budget, as well as a final budget review, if needed.
