Snowy morning leads to frigid day today; Flurries possible for rest of the week
It's a wet, snowy and cold morning in Southwestern Connecticut as one of the first winter weather events of the year has hit home today.
A cold front that moved into the area from the midwest brought temperatures down drastically overnight. In some parts of Fairfield and New Haven counties the shift was as high as 20 degrees in a matter of hours. Yesterday's rain turned to snow showers and in some places the dusty snow stuck to the ground.
The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the region. Issued at 4:45 a.m., the NWS is warning of dangerous driving conditions as a result of the 1 to 3 inches of snow that fell overnight. Flurries remain this morning and could last throughout the day.
Beware on roads and sidewalks this morning as the remaining snow could freeze over as temperatures remain in the 20s. Slick spots could be possible, especially on side streets. The major roadways are mostly clear, but still take caution and expect some slow moving pockets of traffic. Remember that light snow could be covering up dangerous black ice.
The high today is not expected to get past a frigid 25 degrees. There will likely be snow flurries again tonight.
Wind returns to the region tomorrow with gusts between 15 and 25 miles per hour predicted. That will bring the wind chill down to single digits, while the actual high is expected to be around 25. Once again, snow showers are possible into Thursday.
The weekend is expected to be dry as an upper level low pressure system weakens. Temperatures will move back into the mid 30s starting on Thursday.
Sunset today will occur at 4:24 p.m. and there will be 9 hours and 14 minutes of sunlight.
Sunrise on Wednesday will occur at 7:11 a.m.
Low tide today will be at 11:37 a.m. in Milford, 11:40 in Bridgeport and 11:44 in Stamford/Greenwich. It will be high tide today at 5:40 p.m. in Milford, 5:43 in Bridgeport and 5:47 in Stamford/Greenwich.
