The director of facilities and operations for the Darien Public Schools was placed on paid administrative leave after he was charged with larceny.

New Canaan Police said Hans Otto, 52, of Danbury, was charged with third-degree larceny for allegedly stealing several pieces of equipment from the New Canaan Public Schools.

Otto, the former facilities manager of the New Canaan Public Schools, was hired in Darien earlier this year.

In May, the New Canaan school officials reported several missing items, including a wooden table, two folding tables, a hand truck, an air compressor, a portable generator, a laser level with tripod, and a power washer. The total approximate value of the items is $6,800.

After an investigation by both the schools and the police department, an arrest warrant was obtained for Otto, who turned himself in yesterday.

The majority of the items have been recovered and no damage was reported.

Otto resigned from the New Canaan Public Schools on April 8, after 12 years of service.

"If the charges are true, I am deeply disappointed," New Canaan Superintendent David Abbey said. "It's hard to understand."

The Darien Public Schools district will conduct its own investigation into the charges.

Otto posted a $10,000 bond and will appear at Norwalk Superior Court July 12.
