Darien police and fire departments responded to a transformer explosion in Noroton Heights earlier this afternoon.

Fire crews have extinguished the fire; however, power was knocked out to much of the area. CL&P is on the scene.

According to police, rail traffic has been suspended on some tracks. Police believe a tree fell on the power lines in the Moore Street area.

Many traffic lights are out in town, and police are asking drivers to use caution when driving and make a full stop at a non-working light.

Police are also asking residents to resist calling the police department or 911 unless it is an emergency, since curiosity calls can flood the department's phone lines.

It is unknown when power will be restored.
