Two Bronx men arrested in Darien
DARIEN — A man from the Bronx was arrested in Darien for sexual assault charges out of Stonington after police pulled over the car he was riding in for not having a license plate.
On Dec. 31 around 1 p.m., an officer saw a gray Toyota Camry with no front license plate and tinted windows driving westbound near Day Street. A scan of the back plate found no record of registration for the car and the officer stopped the Camry on Ledge Road near the Post Road.
The driver, Mahwanga Campbell, told the officer he was from the Bronx but proceeded to give a fake name. The officer determined the name Campbell gave was fake and after an investigation, arrested the 25-year-old for failure to insure a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana, interfering with police, failure to display a front license plate, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and misuse of a license plate.
At the same time, it was also found that Campbell’s passenger, Derrick McKenzie, also from the Bronx, was wanted in Stonington for fourth-degree sexual assault. He, too, was placed under arrest and brought to headquarters. The 57-year-old was turned over to Stonington officers around 6 p.m.
