Joaquin Ramirez and Joanne Solis, a couple who survived the shooting at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, told KSAT-TV their last-minute decision to attend church Sunday morning made them witnesses to unspeakable carnage.

They heard a hail of bullets and a warning cry from outside: “Everybody get down! They’re shooting at us!”

Near the front door, Solis was shot in the arm, while Ramirez was hit by shrapnel. They survived by playing dead, huddled on the ground.

“Everybody started screaming, yelling,” Solis said. “Everybody got down, under, wherever they could hide.”

She could see bullets hit the church’s carpeted floor.

“I could see the gunshots coming down,” Solis said.

Babies cried, bodies fell. Then silence.

“I thought it was the police when I saw the feet, cuz it was real quiet,” Solis said.

Then, more bullets.

“Everybody die (expletive)!” Solis quoted the shooter as yelling.

Ramirez said he yelled out for help. Then, more cries. The gunman went aisle to a aisle, looking for survivors.

“Los babies lloraban, y cuando lloraban, a vara: Rat-tat-tat-tat,” Ramirez said in Spanish, explaining that when the babies cried, the gunman shot them point blank.

The two were released from the hospital Monday afternoon. | Twitter: @gmaninfedland
