DARIEN — Enticing as the elegant interior is of the stone and shingle colonial house at 10 Nickerson Lane it’s a difficult task to keep its residents inside, even in cold weather months. The setting and the views of Holly Pond are like a siren call drawing people out to the water’s edge, or at the very least to the home’s two levels of expansive solid teak wood decking, generous bluestone patio, and multiple private balconies.
This waterfront oasis has 500 linear feet of water frontage offering 270 degrees of water views. The house was built in 2011 on a property just shy of one acre. The parcel juts out like a mini peninsula so it is surrounded on three sides by water.
When the warm weather arrives they have the heated Gunite swimming pool to enjoy. This is no ordinary backyard swimming “hole.” This pool and its amenities were as carefully thought out as the home’s interior was. It is a vanishing edge, large, free-form, 28 x 40-foot Wagner pool with a custom stone waterfall and adjacent spa. Its Pebble Tec finish was designed to match Holly Pond in color and shape, and glass pool fencing allows for an unimpeded view of the pond and surroundings. The “smart” pool allows function and heat control from inside or outside.
The 8,981-square-foot house is located on a cul-de-sac not far from town and train. It was thoughtfully designed throughout to ensure a water view from almost every room. Many of the architectural and décor features inside give a nod to the waterfront setting and will also draw attention. Throughout the house there are authentic solid teak floors and stairs imported directly from Indonesia. According to the homeowner there are 10,000-square-feet of teak flooring, including on the finished third floor and full finished basement. The flooring is highlighted in some areas with insets.
In the cavernous, open, custom chef’s kitchen the backsplash comprises various marbles arranged in a pattern to replicate waves on Holly Pond or Long Island Sound just beyond, and the rare, imported Azul Macaubus marble from Brazil, which tops the kitchen and bathroom counters, also gives the impression of ocean waves. Two Chihully-styled hand-blown glass chandeliers - one in the two-story foyer and one in the sizable breakfast room, are deep blue and give the sense of undulating water.
From the ample crushed stone, circular driveway, which will come in handy when entertaining, there is a bluestone path to the covered front entrance. Inside, there are water views right from the foyer. The formal living room has a fireplace with a statuary marble surround and coffered ceiling. In the family room there is a stone fireplace, a wet bar, and sliding doors to the deck and patio. The formal dining room has a tray ceiling and tall wainscoting. The large office on the waterfront side has built-in custom cherry cabinets, extensive crown and tiered moldings, and trim detail, and sliding doors to the deck. A smaller office is on the front side. There is also a first floor en suite bedroom.
In the kitchen the features include a center island over which there are pendant lights, custom built-in cabinetry, and top quality appliances including Wolf six-burner range, Wolf warming drawer, Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, and Sub-Zero wine storage refrigerator. In a hallway with a door to the yard there is stone flooring with an inset stone tile “mat” depicting flip flops, a reminder of the casual, comfortable nature to the back of the house compared to the more formal front. This area also houses the mudroom with built-in cubbies and storage.
Upstairs, the spacious and private master suite has a marble fireplace, sliding doors to its own balcony, two large walk-in closets, and marble spa-like bath. There are four other bedrooms on this second level, one of which has French doors to a balcony. Like the pool area, the second floor balconies have glass railings so as not to obstruct the water views.
On the finished lower level there is a game or play room, media room, a home theater with tiered seating for eight in comfortable leather reclining chairs, a fully equipped weight room/gym, and an en suite bedroom or in-law suite.
