DARIEN — If there were a perfect place, geographically, to live in Darien it might be 40 Peach Hill Road in large measure for its location.
The L-shaped white clapboard colonial house with gray shutters at that address has proximity to the Country Club of Darien and Ox Ridge Hunt Club; it is equidistant to the Metro North train stations in downtown Darien and Talmadge Hill; it is not far from the Merritt Parkway and I-95; and it is only minutes away from Darien’s downtown shops and restaurants. It is also walking distance to Royle Elementary School.
This two-acre level property also offers a private setting and a wealth of amenities including a heated in-ground swimming pool, an attached pool house, large stone patio, and an outdoor fireplace on a covered patio. The ample paving stone driveway lined in Belgium block creates a forecourt with lots of parking for the guests who will visit to take advantage of those outdoor amenities.
In cold weather months there is plenty of room indoors for entertaining. The house has 14 rooms and 8,065 square feet of living space. It was built in 1953 and was expanded and remodeled in 2002 to create wide open hallways, light-filled rooms, and an open concept cook’s kitchen and family room.
A bluestone path and wide steps lined with vinca vines lead to the covered front entrance. That entrance and the attached garage feature tall white columns. The garage appears to have two bays but one of those has a tandem space so there is room for three vehicles. Perched atop its columns is a long, narrow pergola adorned with wisteria vines. The front door is flanked by sidelights and it opens into a gallery-like foyer. The foyer and several rooms have hardwood floors with a double border of darker inlaid wood.
The T-shaped foyer provides access into the formal living and dining rooms, both of which have a fireplace. The dining room has paneling on the lower walls and an attractive covering on the upper walls. Two sets of French doors open from two different hallways of the foyer to a separate sitting room, which has a coffered ceiling comprising exposed beams and an entryway into the study or library, which has wood paneled walls and built-in open shelving, cabinetry, and a media center.
Just before the entrance into the kitchen there is a butler’s pantry with a wet bar, beverage refrigerator, and door to the patio and pool. The white ceramic tiles of the backsplash are not flat but each one is raised in a way that gives a basket weave effect to the wall. This same backsplash is found in the kitchen as well. The kitchen also features a large center island, farm sink, granite counters, and professional appliances including a Viking Professional six-burner range with two ovens and a large grill. The long island has a beveled granite counter and doubles as a breakfast bar for six. Two built-in window seats with storage drawers underneath flank a built-in desk area.
In the family room there is a cathedral ceiling with exposed trestle beams, a stone fireplace, built-in shelving and cabinetry. It also has two sets of French doors to the patio and pool. In another wing, closer to the butler’s pantry, there is a large sunroom or solarium with a wall of built-in shelving and two sets of French doors to the covered patio with a bead board and coffered ceiling and the outdoor fireplace. The current family has a television above the fireplace; the perfect place to relax and take in a ball game, even in cooler weather months.
On the second floor there are four bedrooms, including the master suite, which has its own wing. It has a large, custom walk-in closet, dressing room, white marble bath, coffee bar, and two sets of French doors to a large balcony above the covered patio. Another bedroom is en suite and two others share a Jack-and-Jill-style bath. On the third floor there are two more bedrooms and a full bath. These rooms have flexible use as a playroom, exercise room, or an au pair suite.
