DARIEN — The owners of the colonial at 3 Petticoat Lane refer to it as “the gathering house.” It doesn’t matter the time of year. Family and friends enjoy spending time there in all seasons and the owners enjoy entertaining; and this property offers the best of indoor and outdoor living and entertaining.

This white clapboard house is located at the end of a private cul-de-sac and sits on a largely level property of just over two acres. It’s a great yard that has many uses and lends itself to living, recreation and entertaining, the owners said. In cold weather months they install rink boards and plastic lining on the lawn and have a pool water truck deliver enough liquid to create a 30 x 60-foot skating surface. In summer months they play on the half basketball court, tend to their fenced-in custom-built “farm-to-table” vegetable garden, use the batting cage and volleyball net they set up on the lawn, and swim in their heated, in-ground salt water pool.

The pool was already there when the current family moved in but they are the ones who converted it from a chlorine to salt water pool. “It’s more like a spa. The water tingles. It’s refreshing. And it doesn’t dry your skin like chlorine,” one of the owners said, adding that other benefits of having a salt water pool include its low maintenance and the fact that they don’t have to store pool chemicals on the premises. The pool also has an automatic cleaner.

When it was built in 1961 it was a typical center hall colonial. Fifteen years ago the house was gutted and renovated to give it a more contemporary flare and appealing appearance more suited to today’s lifestyle. It has 3,643 square feet of living space on the main levels and another 937 square feet in the full finished walk-out lower level, which has a playroom, exercise area, storage space, and a mudroom, where there is access to the two-car attached garage.

This house has other advantages. It is equidistant to the Talmadge Hill and Noroton Heights Metro North train stations and it is only about three minutes to downtown Darien. Schools are also close by.

Drive down to the end of this private cul-de-sac to access this house. Walk up the stone and slate steps and pathway to the covered front porch where the paneled front door has dentil molding and is flanked by sidelights. Inside, the good sized foyer provides access into the formal living room, guest bedroom, and kitchen. Two tall columns mark the entrance into the living room, which has a fireplace with dentil molding on the mantel and built-in shelving and cabinetry.

In the formal dining room there is wainscoting on the lower walls and French doors to the wood deck and yard. The kitchen has a center island topped with two-inch-thick Calacatta Gold marble, decorative white ceramic tile backsplash, cabinetry with egg and dart molding, and a hardwood floor with a gray-beige stain. The eat-in area has sliding doors to the deck and yard. Appliances include a Thermador five-burner range top and double wall ovens.

From the kitchen into the family room there are two columns in the arched entryway. This room has sliding doors to the deck and a fireplace with a raised hearth and an interesting surround of small white ceramic tiles arranged in a herringbone pattern. The same tile and pattern is repeated on the backsplash of the wet bar in this room. It has a beverage refrigerator and glass front cabinetry.

In the en suite guest bedroom there is a red brick fireplace. The remaining three bedrooms are on the second floor. French doors lead into the spacious master bedroom suite, which has a vaulted ceiling with a deep tray and a walk-in closet. Another set of French doors lead into the marble master bath.

The yard is as attractive as the interior. The current owners had extensive landscaping work done to the property to orchestrate the explosion of colorful blossoms from spring to fall. As one group of perennial flowers stop blooming another group of flowers are poised to bloom.
