On the Market / A ‘must have’ house in Darien
DARIEN — When the current owners of the pale gray ranch house with black shutters at 9 Devonshire Drive first went house hunting they put together a list of “must haves.” Throughout their search they found it hard to meet their list of requirements, which included being within a 10-minute walk of a Metro North train station, a quiet street, and the house had to have an office and a “man cave area to watch sports and movies in.”
“We looked at dozens of houses in Darien and New Canaan and couldn’t find anything that fit all of these criteria … Ultimately we were able to achieve them all when we found the Devonshire Drive house,” said one of the owners.
Proximity to the train “was non-negotiable and really limited the places we could look,” he said. The Devonshire Drive house, in the Noroton Heights neighborhood, is only a half mile from the Noroton Heights train station. The house sits on a quiet street that is not a “cut through” for traffic so it is safe for children to play outside, and the finished walk-out lower level provides flexible use space as a family room, playroom, game room, media room, office, or a man cave. In fact, with the layout and square footage there is enough room to accommodate several purposes. One of the spaces has a floor-to-ceiling distressed brick fireplace, bookshelves, and a full bath with a shower. A previous owner created an au pair suite in this space. The laundry room is on this level.
“The street turned out to be a real gem, we made quick friends with neighbors who also had young kids, and (we) would take our newborn out for daily walks around the block. When it is nice out, we would regularly walk out to get breakfast at Darien Doughnut or to Palmers (gourmet market) and Stop and Shop for groceries,” he said.
Additionally, the location places the house close to Hindley Elementary School, which was recognized in 2012 as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Also not far away is Post Road (Route 1) and all its local shops, restaurants, and the Darien YMCA.
The updated and well-kept home was originally built in 1951. It has 1,696-square feet of living space. The portion of the paved driveway near the one-car attached garage is bordered by stone walls. The same stones adorn the staircase on the home’s front façade, which leads to the entrance on the main living level. The spacious living room has a fireplace and is open to the dining room. In the dining room there is paneling on the lower walls and sliding doors to the large custom paving stone patio with a sitting wall and backyard, which is enclosed with a white picket fence. The patio has a fire pit.
In the updated eat-in kitchen there are granite counters, a hardwood floor, a pantry, some glass-front cabinets, and a breakfast nook with two walls of double-hung windows. Most of the appliances are new.
There are three bedrooms, including the master, on the main level and a full bath with a jetted tub.
In the backyard of this 0.17-acre level and gently sloping property there are perennials, shrubbery, and mature trees on the perimeter which, combined with natural wood fencing, provide privacy.
