NEW CANAAN — No one would guess that the elegant, timeless, well-appointed gray shingle and stone colonial at 79 Devonwood Lane was built as a “spec” house. Few houses built on speculation have the number of amenities and level of detail that this 8,003-square-foot, 14-room residence does.
When it was built in 2006 this house was given generously proportioned spaces for living and entertaining, an English pub-like bar with a kegerator, wine cellar, gym and training rooms, heated in-ground swimming pool and spa, an outdoor fireplace, and fully equipped outdoor kitchen. It is also wired for both Crestron and SONOS audio systems, and it has decorative moldings and millwork.
The majestic house sits on a majestic two-acre level property half way down a quiet cul-de-sac providing it immense privacy and yet it is only about three minutes from the center of town and the Metro North train station. The front of the property is bordered by a stone wall and the entrance to the long driveway is marked by two stone pillars topped with lanterns. The front yard contains a large open lawn, landscaped shrubbery, a pond, a stream, a footbridge, and a stone well.
From the circular driveway lined in Belgium block there is a bluestone path to the covered front entrance, which features four columns, decorative glass and wood sidelights and an arched transom. The door opens to the two-story foyer, which has a marble floor, a gracefully curved staircase, paneling on the lower walls, and fluted pilasters flanking the front door.
Off the foyer is the formal dining room in one direction and the formal living room on the other. Both rooms have wainscoting on the lower walls, wood-burning fireplaces with ornate mantels, and crown molding depicting an egg and dart pattern. The living room fireplace contains Ionic rounded and fluted columns. Its firebox of red brick is arranged in a herringbone pattern, as are the dark hardwood floors in the living and dining rooms, both of which have a light wood inlaid border.
Step down into the sunken family room, which has four Doric columns, a coffered ceiling, a stone fireplace, bead board on the lower walls, and French doors to the expansive patio and backyard. There are French doors into a cherry paneled office, which features Corinthian columns, built-in bookshelves, and a window seat. On the other side of the family room step up into the breakfast room, which is open to the large gourmet country kitchen.
