NEW CANAAN — Masterpiece on PBS found success after Downton Abbey with another highly rated series, Victoria, a drama about the teenaged monarch whose lengthy reign of 64 years was recently eclipsed by her great-great granddaughter Elizabeth, who celebrated her 65th Jubilee in 2015.
Queen Victoria was crowned in 1837 and reigned until her death in 1901. A year before her passing a house built in a style that bears her name was built on an in-town property of almost half an acre at 29 Church St. in New Canaan. This regal, 12-room residence is within walking distance to the Metro North train station and the town center with its shops and restaurants. It is also close to local schools, the YMCA, and Waveny Park.
It is as welcoming inside as the covered wrap-around porch is on the front exterior of the white clapboard house. A patterned red brick path lined in Belgium block leads from the sidewalk to the porch, which features a swing and two doors, the formal front entrance and a side entrance into the sizable foyer. The large glass pane in the front door is beveled and the door knob is cut glass.
The renovated house is deceptive in its size, containing 4,064 square feet of living space on four finished floors, including six bedrooms. It doesn’t appear that large at first glance. During its renovation this house was given an open concept floor plan with the foyer flowing into the formal living room and the living room flowing into the formal dining room. The home’s only fireplace, which has a marble surround, is found in the living room. The dining room has chair railing, picture frame paneling on the lower walls, and a built-in corner china cabinet.
A long hall leads to the back of the house and into the spacious gourmet kitchen, where there is a center island, a long built-in window seat, and a separate eat-in area. Kitchen features include granite counters, large pantry, two stainless sinks and a third prep sink in the island, which is topped in marble. One counter area includes glass-front cabinetry, a built-in wine rack, and a beverage refrigerator. High-end appliances include an imported Beko refrigerator, a Viking Professional six-burner range with griddle, and a Thermador warming oven.
Off the kitchen is a mudroom with a built-in bench, storage, and a door to the covered back porch and yard, which is large enough to accommodate an in-ground swimming pool. This part of the house also has a half bath and a pocket door into the laundry room. On the first floor there is also an office that could double as a homework station. It has a long built-in counter area on two walls and built-in bookshelves, and can accommodate three chairs and work stations.
