On the market: Waterfront fun year round
DARIEN — Waterfront living has its advantages throughout the year. When summer passes by and the weather becomes too cold to enjoy outdoor recreational activities on and in the water of the beige-colored antique colonial house at 104 Five Mile River Road its inhabitants can still enjoy the spectacular views along their 120 feet of waterfront on Five Mile River and Long Island Sound.
Until cooler temperatures chase them inside residents can continue to engage in water activities on the river, in the Sound, and in the 0.79-acre property’s infinity pool. They can also relax in the spa. As they dine in the very large screened porch off the chef’s kitchen they can listen to the soothing sound of the pool’s waterfall.
The date of construction for this house is 1900 just at the turn of the 19th century into the 20th but no one from that time period would recognize this residence. It was gutted in 2009 and the only original part of the house that remains is the hardwood flooring in the study. During the rebuilding process the footprint of the house was also expanded to 4,945 square feet. The house has retained a sense of Five Mile River history while offering amenities suitable for 21st century life and desired by today’s buyers. It was given an open floor plan inside and an outdoor living area with a fireplace in the spacious backyard where there are also rose gardens and vegetable gardens.
In the construction the house was given two more bedrooms for a total of five, a two-car garage, a large gym and the screened porch, where the current family dines most often. The porch has a cathedral ceiling, skylights, nearly floor-to-ceiling windows topped with transoms and French doors to the yard.
This is not a formal house, according to one of the owners. It is ideal for casual living and entertaining inside and out.
Because the house is built into a hill the foyer is on the lower level and there are stairs that lead to the main living level, which contains an office with a wall of built-in bookshelves and wainscoting on the lower walls, a semi-formal dining room with a fireplace, and a living room, which also has a fireplace. The kitchen features marble counters, a large center island, white ceramic tile backsplash, hardwood floor and high-end stainless steel appliances and a wine refrigerator. The kitchen is open to the family room, which has two separate doors to a balcony looking over the river.
Off the foyer is a guest suite with French doors to its own private covered patio on the river side. Its bath has a steam shower. The walk out lower level also contains the gym. Which has a mirrored wall.
On the third floor above the main level there are four bedrooms. The master suite features a jetted tub, shower stall, large walk-in closet and door to a balcony/porch with river views. One of the bedrooms has a built-in desk and lower cabinetry. Another bedroom has a skylight. Three of the five bedrooms have wall-to-wall carpeting. One of the baths has disability access with special features including grab bars, lever faucets, and multiple entries and exits.
