Darien Little League celebrated the start of its 63rd season and the 75th anniversary of Little League baseball with a fun-filled afternoon at McGuane Park on Sunday. Hundreds of Little League baseball, softball and challenger players marched from Darien High School to McGuane, where league president Hutch Pegler led the annual Opening Day ceremony. Middlesex Middle School seventh grader Sarah Longo kicked off the festivities by singing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. State Representative Terrie Wood and First Selectman Jayme Stevenson, in addition to members of the Darien High School baseball and softball teams, were on hand to offer words of encouragement to the players and their families. Challenger players then led the crowd in the Little League Pledge. To conclude the ceremony, Darien Little League parent and New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said a few words as the featured guest speaker and threw out the first pitch. Mr. Cashman generously stayed on the field to sign autographs and take pictures in front of the Yankees' 2009 World Series trophy with each and every autograph seeker.
