Darien Park and Rec winter programs now open for registration
The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for the residents of Darien and registration for winter programs is now open. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office located in Town Hall, or through the mail. Tiny Tots Soccer: Blue Wave Kickers' Tiny Tots Soccer engages children in physical activity while developing their motor and basic soccer skills. Mommy/Daddy and Me classes are offered on Friday and Saturday mornings and classes for children ages 3-5 are offered Wednesday through Saturday. The first winter session begins in early December while session two starts in early February. Please vist the Parks & Recreation website for a complete list of classes and fees.
Blue Wave Kickers Little Athletes: Blue Wave Kickers staff will engage your child in physical activity while developing motor skills and sports fundamentals. They will help your child build confidence and self-esteem by playing fun games built around sports such as soccer, basketball and t-ball. This program will run on Wednesdays from 1:30 -2:15pm and Thursdays from 1:15-2pm for six weeks in the Town Hall gymnasium. The first session begins Dec. 3 while the second session starts Feb. 4. The fee for this program is $110 for Darien residents; $132 for non-residents.
Karate: Darien Martial Arts Academy will be offering karate lessons this winter at their studio on Heights Road. Improved strength and stamina, better balance and improved listening/concentration skillls are a few examples of how martial arts can compliment both classroom and sports performance. This program is offered starting Dec. 1 for 12 weeks. Please vist the Parks & Recreation website for a complete list of classes. Program fee is $425 for Darien residents/$510 for non-residents.
Future Stars Basketball: Darien Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce that Future Stars Basketball Academy will be offering an instructional program for boys and girls ages 5-10 and 10-13 this winter on Monday afternoons from 4-5:30pm at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. This program will meet for eight weeks starting Jan. 5. The program fee is $215 for Darien residents; $258 for non-residents. Each player will receive a Future Stars jersey for participating. This program will include Future Stars' Lessons of Life Program (sportsmanship, teamwork, doing well in school, respecting your parents, etc.) and will be run by former college star and NBA player Frank Oleynick.
Junior Paddle Tennis Lessons: These clinics are an introduction to the game of paddle tennis at Weed Beach. Clinics will utilize fun drills and games to teach participants the rules and strategies of paddle tennis. Paddles will be provided, or participants may use their own. Clinics will run at Weed Beach starting Jan. 5 for eight weeks on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons for ages 7-10 and 11-14. The fee for these lessons is $215 for Darien residents/$258 for non-residents.
Pee-Wee Tennis: New Level Sports will be offering indoor pee-wee tennis lessons at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium starting in January. Lessons are held for children ages 3-5 on Monday or Thursday afternoons in 45-minute increments from 12:15-3:15pm. Each participant will receive a tennis racket. Program fee is $125 for Darien residents/$150 for non-residents. Please check the Parks and Recreation website for a complete list of classes.
Guitar Lessons: Want to be the next American Idol? Now's your chance to get a start. Learn chords, scales, theory and, best of all, learn to play your favorite songs. Classes meet each Wednesday in the new Mather Center starting Jan. 7 through Mar. 4. Beginners meet from 4-5pm or 5-6pm while intermediates meet from 6-7pm. This program is for children ages 8-15. The fee for this program is $245 for Darien residents/$294 for non-residents.
Piano Lessons: This revolutionary piano program builds a musical foundation and creates a hobby that will last a lifetime. Classroom keyboards and all materials are included in the registration fee. Classes for beginning children ages 6 and up will be held from 4-5pm. This course meets for nine Tuesday afternoons starting January 6th in the new Mather Center. Fee is $200 for Darien residents/$240 for non-residents.
Drum Lessons: Want to rock out on the drums? Now is your chance to get started. All the basics are covered to help you begin your drumming journey. Not only will you learn proper technique and how to read rhythmic notation but you will also learn how to play cool rock beats and fills. Students will rotate between playing drum pads, bongos, snare drum and drum set. Drum sticks and practice pads will be provided for all students. Classes meet Thursdays from January 8th- March 5th in the new Mather Center. This program, for children ages 8-15, will focus on beginning drums and will meet from 4-5 or 5-6pm. The fee for this program is $270 for Darien residents; $324 for non-residents.
Girls Yoga: Yoga is an excellent foundation for everything in life. It enhances sports training and dance; it increases strength and flexibility as well as increases attentiveness and awareness. Your child will learn to cherish the art of meditation and will relish in the relaxation component of yoga. Classes will be held at Elements Yoga & Wellness Center (Heights Road) on Tuesdays for ages 11-14 at 3-3:50pm and for ages 7-10 from 4-4:50pm starting Jan. 13. Fee is $185 for Darien residents/$222 for non-residents.
Mad Science: This new program will be held on Thursday afternoons this winter from January 8th -- March 5th. Classes for ages 3 -- 5 will meet from 1:45-2:30pm in room 119 of the Darien Town Hall. Children will explore a different science experiment each week with topics including dinosaurs, butterflies and dry ice. Classes for ages 5-8 will meet from 4-5pm in room 205 of the new Mather Center. These STEM focused classes are sure to stimulate the senses with new experiments each week. The fee for this program is $175 for Darien residents; $210 for non-residents.
Fit Fridays: Rebounding, Zumba, Hooping, Boot Camp, Jump Rope Sports and Yoga are the fitness formats experienced in this unique program. Nutritional education also included. Classes will be held in the Darien Town Hall gymnasium starting Friday, Jan. 9 for eight weeks for ages 6-12. Boys and girls class will run from 4:15-5:15pm while girls class will be held from 5:15-6:15pm. Fee is $120 for Darien residents/$144 for non-residents.
Adult Paddle Tennis Lessons: Buddy Scudder, Certified Platform Tennis Professional, will be offering adult clinics at Weed Beach this winter. Instruction will focus on stroke production, strategy and teamwork with a mixture of high intensity drills, point-situation drills, technique work and match play. Clinics will run for eight weeks starting Jan. 5 on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. Please check the website or call the office for specific times and levels. The fee is $320 for Darien residents; $384 for non-residents for these one and a half hour clinics. Pre-registration is required for these programs.
Adult Yoga: We will be offering adult yoga classes at Elements Yoga & Wellness Center this winter. Pre-Natal Yoga will be offered on Mondays from 7:15-8:30pm from Jan. 12--Mar. 2 while Core Yoga will take place on Wednesdays from 7:30-8:30pm starting Jan. 14--Nov. 26. The fee for these program is $155 for Darien residents; $186 for non-residents.
Beginner's Yoga is offered on Saturdays from 12:30-1:30pm from Jan. 24-Feb. 28. The fee for this program is $90 for Darien residents; $108 for non-residents. Pre-registration is required for these programs.
HIIT 2B Fit: Try this High Intensity Interval Training class. Get ready to push yourself to your limit for short bursts of time and focus on total body toning during recovery periods. H.I.I.T training burns significantly more calories than a traditional steady pace workout of the same duration - even when class is over. Take your fitness to the next level while having a blast. Each small group interval class is focused on the entire body. We will incorporate basic body weight exercises as well as equipment to push you past your comfort zone to see real change.
