NEW CANAAN — It was too deep a hole to overcome.

The Darien High School softball team scored six runs in the first inning Friday and went on to conquer suburban archrival New Canaan, 14-1 at Waveny Park.

The Darien offense rapped out 17 hits to make it an easier afternoon for Blue Wave junior right-hander Sophia Barbour.

Barbour fashioned a complete-game, four-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk. Barbour was a big factor offensively as well with three hits including a monster solo homer to left in the seventh inning.

“Sophia had a lot of downward movement on her pitches. And that was an amazing homer she hit,” Darien coach Nick DeMaio said. “Her demeanor on the mound is intense. She has focus and determination. She is seizing the opportunity on the mound. And she’s such a strong hitter.”

Jess Carlo and Cassidy Schiff also contributed three hits for Darien, which scored five runs in the sixth and two in the seventh as insurance.

Most importantly, the defense for Darien (3-2, 3-1 FCIAC) was flawless as the Blue Wave have just two seniors back from last year.

“We do have a group of juniors who have played three years for us. We have a mix of youngsters and veterans,” DeMaio said. “What I liked about today was we bounced back from losing (2-0) to Ludlowe last Wednesday. Our offense exploded today. Our hitters were in rhythm. We want consistency going forward.”

Despite the loss New Canaan is now also 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the FCIAC. The Rams have no seniors on their roster.

New Canaan received two hits and one RBI from shortstop Rachel Keshin. All three NC errors proved costly.

“We know that we can’t win every game. We can only focus on tomorrow,” said New Canaan’s veteran coach Danielle Simoneau. “Darien is a great hitting team. When you make mistakes, they make you pay. We have three freshmen starters and some sophomores. But we played well enough to beat Greenwich and Stamford earlier in the season. So we can’t focus on one game. Darien was simply better today.”
